Texte de l'introduction de Zaïde

Erzähler

« Jetzt hören Sie doch auf ! »

„Entschuldigung…. Im Orient hat es schon Kultur

gegeben, da hat man bei uns noch…'

„Ach so ! Sie sind also für die Terroristen?"

„Nein, da haben Sie mich falsch verstanden. Ich mein'

nur, weil Sie von Kultur…"

„Ich habe Sie ganz richtig verstanden. Sie finden es in

Ordnung, wenn die unschuldige Menschen umbringen"

„Nein, sie haben  mir nicht zugehört"

„Jetzt hören Sie mir mal zu ! Sie bekunden hier offen

Ihre Sympathie für den Terror. Wer sind Sie eigentlich,

sind Sie von der Presse ?"

Zeitgenossen beim Letzten Republikanerparteitag,

etwas frei übersetzt.

Zeitsprung :

getreten, nämlich die amerikanische Unabhängigkeitserklärung;

mit wem man will.

Trend gesetzt: Er flicht gesprochene Monologe in instrumentale

mehr: don't bring everybody down like that…

"Welt und Not ist einerlei,

keiner bleibt von Plagen frei".

„Mais arrêtez donc ! „

Un bond dans le temps ;

down like that….

« Peu importent le monde et la détresse,

à chacun son calvaire. »

« Stop now, for goodness' sake! »

« They just hate us because they have no culture. »

« The Moslems hate us for our freedom and our

culture. That's why they want to destroy us. »

« Excuse me, but they already had culture in the

Orient back in the days when we were still... »

« Aha! So you support the terrorists, do you? »

« No, you misunderstood me. I just meant that when

you start talking about culture... »

« On the contrary, I understood you perfectly.you

think it is OK for them to kill innocent people »

« Not at all, you weren't listening! »

« Now you listen to me! You're openly declaring your

sympathy with the terrosrists. Who the heck are you?

Are you from the press? »

Overheard at the last Republican Party convention

and freely translated.

Cut to the 18th century:

1740, Frederick the Great :

« All religions must be tolerated, and the state must

make sure that no faith does harm to another : each

man must find satisfaction here after his own

fashion . »

One would normally assume that the more tolerant

of these opinions is more recent in date....

The story we are going to tell you this evening dates

from 1779. Three years earlier saw the world's first

human rights convention come into force, namely the

American declaration of independence. Two years later,

the Austrian emperor Joseph 11 introduced his pro-

gramme of political and social reforms, and ten years

later the French Revolution sounded the death knell for

feudalism in Europe.

In other words, the issue that preoccupied people in

this period – in the midst of the Sturm and Drang era

and at the end of the Enlightenment – was freedom :

freedom of worship, freedom of thought, freedom of

spirit (the latter something that Thomas Mann re-

commended to the Germans once more after 1945, as

they had mislaid it again in the intervening years).

Our story is likewise concerned with freedom, and

the people who experience the events here speak of no-

thing else. The characters' wishes are simple : they want to

be free to love whom they want, to live where they want

and to go where they want and with whom they want.

But in Europe at this time, scarcely anyone had

these freedoms. Obviously the lower classes didn't

have them, ditto the serfs working the land. But the

daughters of Empress Maria Theresia, for instance,

didn't enjoy them either.

Zaïde plays through this subject based on the fate of

the salves- European slaves at a sultan's court. Really

a rather naïve story that also looks to be unpolitical at

first glance. When the European slave tells the Turkish

pasha that he can only live in freedom, no-one suspects

there is anything more to it, and certainly not the nasty

political song that is already scratching at the door.

Mozart and his librettist Schachtner followed the

same path as many of their contemporaries: they used

an exotic setting to smuggle freethinking past the censor.

Moreover, the Orient was in vogue at the time. The

equivalent of today's « Sex sells! » was « Turkey sells! »-

since the Turks had laid siege to Vienna and been

defeated, they were a fair way away, and as long as

they didn't try to march into Europe again, they could

be enjoyed (at a distance) for the perfume and the

sensuous thrill of the exotic. Mohammed's followers

were alien, it's true, and they were known for their

cruelty- but so were Europeans in those days.

Mozart was an alert observer of his surroundings;

he made use of the latest operatic resources, and he

was always on the lookout for new material. Recita-

tives sung in German were unknwon in Mozart's day.

But Georg Anton Benda had just set the latest mu-

sical trend, weaving spoken monologues into instru-

mental music: the melodrama was thus rediscovered,

and Mozart experimented with this new model twice

over there. Many scholars see Zaïde as a kind of practice

piece for Die Entführung aus dem Serail, but in reality

it is more like an uncut diamond-an experiment that

Mozart was not to repeat in this form.

So let's follow into the seraglio!

We slaves are just taking our lunch break-in

other words, to economize we have just become the

chorus-and we sing of our irreversible fate, slogging

away all day, that's just the way life is. We munch on

our sandwiches and don't wonder-not any more, at

least-whether there is any meaning to this dull and

repetitive existence: don't bring everybody down like

that...

« The world is all trial and tribulation

The same old grind for everyone ».
